Frequently Asked Question
About Air Soft
1- What is airsoft?
A: Airsoft guns are replicas of civilian and
military pistols and rifles that shoot abs
plastic, paintball, and metallic 6mm bbs for
training, gaming, or plinking.
2- Where did the name airsoft
come from?
A: Airsoft guns were given their name due to
the fact that the pistols and rifles hoot a low
velocities or "shoot air softer," compared to
traditional bb and pellet guns.
3- What do airsoft guns
shoot?
A: Airsoft pistols and rifles shoot 6mm
plastic, paintball, and metallic bbs that vary in
weight but not caliber.
4- Why are airsoft guns sold
with orange barrels or markings?
A: Airsoft guns are required to have orange
barrels or markings due to federal and state laws.
The orange markings are meant to prevent confusion
between and airsft gun and a real firearm. Due to
federal law and sfety reasons, the orange barrel
or markings should never be removed from any
airsoft pistol or rifle.
5- Will airsoft guns shoot
any other caliber than 6mm bbs?
A: NO, almost all airsoft guns were meant to
shoot a 6mm bb. Airsoft guns can however shoot bbs
or different weight and materials as long as they
are 6mm.
6- Can airsoft guns shoot
paintball bbs?
A: Yes, airsoft guns can shoot paintball bbs as
long as they are 6mm in caliber and of high enough
quality that they do not break in the shooting
process.
7- What airsoft guns can
shoot paintball bbs?
A: Almost all airsoft guns can shoot paintball
bbs, but we have found that guns that the bbs
stager in the clips do not load the paintball bbs
well.
8- How do airsoft spring
pistols work?
A: Airsoft spring pistols basically work by
pulling back the pistol's slide, which compresses
a spring mechanism that is released when the
trigger is pulled. The force of the spring pushing
the air is what propels the bb.
9- How do airsoft gas
non-blow back guns work?
A: Airsoft gas non-blow back pistols are
powered by compressed refrigerant gas, for
example: 134A which is a lower pressured gas,
Green Gas which is a medium pressure gas, and red
gas which is a high pressure gas. The gas is
either loaded into a valve on the bottom of the
airsoft gas non-blowback pistol, or a valve on the
bottom of the removable magazine. In either case,
the gas is stored in a well, which is then
released by another valve when the trigger system
is pulled. the force of the gas being released
propels the bb.
10- Why doesn't the slide
move on the gas non-blow back pistols?
A: The slide does not move on the airsoft gas
non-blow back pistols, because they were designed
to use the stored gas in the gas well to propel
the bb, not move the slide. In most cases, you
should not move the airsoft gas non-blow back
pistol's slide back and forth manually. The slide
was not designed to move and moving the slide
manually can cause damage to the pistol or wear it
out.
11- How do airsoft gas blow
back pistols work?
A: Airsoft gas blow back pistols also work by
compressed gas being stored in a well through
insertion of a valve that is usually on the bottom
of a removable magazine. The gas is then released
through another valve when the trigger is pulled
causing a pin to push in the release valve. The
gas then exits the valve causing the slide to move
backwards and propel the bb out of the barrel.
When the slide "blows back," the slide moves
backwards and returns to its starting position
ready to shoot another bb in the same manner. When
the gas blowback's magazine is out of bbs, the
slide will lock back to indicate to the shooter
that the magazine is now empty as in the
replication of a real firearm. If the magazine is
out of gas the gun will not recock it's self or
give you a low velocity shot.
12- What is the average
velocity of airsoft guns and rifles?
A: The average velocity for an airsoft pistol
and rifle will vary on what the power source is
that is propelling the bb. Airsoft spring pistols
average feet per second (FPS) is usually between
150-250 fps. Airsoft spring rifles usually shoot
250 fps. Airsoft mini electric pistols usually
shoot between 120-150fps. Airsoft 1/1 scale
electric rifles such as an ICS MP5 usually shoot
between 300-400fps (Upgraded electric rifles can
shoot harder than 400fps, but it is not
recommended). Airsoft green gas pistols or machine
pistols usually shoot between 300-340fps. Airsoft
12gram gas pistols shoot between 330-405.
13- How long have Airsoft
guns been in the United States?
A: Airsoft guns have been mass distributed and
sold to the general public in the United States
since 1987. The design for most current airsoft
pistols and rifles was perfected in Japan.
14- How old do you need to be
to buy and airsoft gun?
A: You must be eighteen years of age to buy an
airsoft gun, and you must have adult supervision
if you are under eighteen to use them.
15- Will a 6mm bb break the
skin of a human, and if so, what type of head
protection is best for airsoft gun gamers?
A: At close range, yes a 6mm bb will break the
skin of a human being. A paintball mask should
always be worn to prevent injury to the facial
area. Long sleeve clothing as well as pants that
cover the players entire legs should be worn
whenever plying airsoft.
16- Are there competitive
airsoft activities available to participate in?
A: Competitively, there are many forums for an
airsoft player to participate in. Many paintball
fields will allow players to use airsoft rifles
and pistols instead of a paintball gun. In some
cases though the paintball fields require airsoft
players to use specific bbs that are
biodegradable. There are also many airsoft
tournaments that are held throughout the United
States. Most of the larger airsoft tournaments
have been held in California, Michigan, or
Georgia.
